Concrete Blocks - Standard Blocks

The standard block is 8 by 8 by16 inches and comes as a stretcher block--used when only the sides are exposed. A corner block is used when both the sides and the ends are exposed, and a half-block is used for corners. Variations on this standard block are made in 4-, 6-, and 12-inch widths.
The standard block is made of heavy aggregate and weighs about 45 pounds. A lighter cinder block, molded of a light-weight aggregate, is easier to move around your yard. Either block is suitable for most residential construction.
